Second Grade
The second grade is a year full of discovery and adventures
for our students at CCS. Students will become scientists when
they explore the characteristics of magnets with our Magnetism
unit and then historians when uncovering the events and people
of Ancient Greece. Students will also participate in first hand
experiences such as our Chinese New Year parade in
correlation
with our studies of the country of China. Second grade
students will give the school a brief history of the Chinese New
Year and invite them to make decorations and cheer them on in
the parade.
In second grade, students will continue their Math topics from
first grade. The topics we cover will go more in depth using the
foundation of knowledge the students have previously learned.
Some concepts we cover are addition and subtraction with
regrouping, counting and making change using money, fractions,
measurement, geometry, multiplication, and time using the clock
and a calendar. It is very important for second grade students
to practice their addition and subtraction math facts on a
regular basis. This will aide students in their mastery of
computation strategies.
Reading and Language Arts
are a crucial component to our second
grade curriculum. Students will learn a wide variety of
reading genres and will be able to practice reading daily.
Second graders are encouraged and taught how to repsond to
literature in both small and whole class groups. Our goal is to
have students reading at or above grade level by the end of the
year. With our Core Knowledge curriculum the second grade
students will get to read many classic stories such as Beauty
and the Beast, The Blind Men and the Elephant, Charlotte�s Web,
and El Pajaro Cu. At home, the students will need to read for at
least 15 minutes each night. This will help students strengthen
their reading fluency and comprehension strategies. Second
graders will also write many compositions throughout the year.
They will use the prewriting, rough draft, editing and final
draft process with most assignments.
The second grade at CCS is a time for learning and excitement
for our students, parents, and teachers. Together, using our
Core Vitures such as Repsonsibility, Respect, and Diligence, we
will have a successful year of learning and growing.
