Project Salad

Mesa Materials was kind enough to provide us with garden amendments, such as soil and sand, free of charge! Students planted a variety of vegetables, took care of them and watched them grow. The Kindergarteners planted radishes and green onions. First grade planted spinach, and second grade planted celery and peas. The third graders did their best to grow cucumbers, and the fourth graders transplanted tomato plants. Fifth grade planted bell peppers and carrots, and our sixth graders grew lettuce. It was so fun for the kids to see their plants growing and their hard work paying off. At the end of February students harvested their vegetables, and then everyone was able to dine on the "fruits of their labor". Thank you to Banner Catering for their help and generosity in making sure every child received a delicious salad with all of the vegetables we had grown in our garden. Some of our students were willing to give salad a taste for the very first time, and most found that growing veggies yourself makes them even more delicious! Our students benefited from this important hands-on experience, with lots of lessons relating to science and math standards. Many lessons about plant life cycles, measurement and weather were learned through this experience.
